Blueberry Basil Compote for Pancakes
It’s Summertime and blueberry season! What better way to enjoy some fresh juicy blueberries than on top of pancakes. This blueberry basil sauce is fast and easy to make. The prep and cook time is less than twenty minutes total. Fruit compote is amazing served right away as a warm runny sauce but if you prefer a thicker sauce make it the night before. As the sauce chills in the fridge overnight it will thicken.

Summertime Freshness in Blueberry Basil Compote!
We love using locally grown fruit when it’s in season. Frozen berries can also be used when out of season. Have you ever been to a local farm where you can pick the berries yourself? Berry picking is a fun family friendly outdoor activity. To find a local U-Pick farm near you try this website. I have found it to be a helpful resource in supporting local farmers.
How to Make Easy Fruit Compote
This blueberry basil compote seems fancy, but it is incredibly easy to make. You only need four simple ingredients and less than 20 minutes to bring it all together. In the summer, I love to make a big batch with fresh, locally picked berries and freeze any leftover sauce to enjoy later in the year.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Combine the Ingredients: Add your fresh blueberries, chopped basil, lime juice, sugar, and water into a small saucepan.
- Bring to a Boil: Place the pot over medium-high heat and bring the mixture to a gentle boil, stirring occasionally to help the sugar dissolve.
- Simmer and Thicken: Reduce the heat to low and let the blueberry basil sauce simmer for about 10 minutes. Stir it every now and then. You’ll notice the berries bursting and releasing their beautiful, deep juices.
- Serve or Chill: Remove the pan from the heat. You can serve the compote immediately as a warm, runny sauce, or transfer it to a jar and chill it in the fridge overnight to let it naturally thicken up.
Pro-Tips for the Perfect Compote:
- The Texture Secret: If you prefer a smoother sauce, you can gently mash some of the blueberries with the back of a spoon while it simmers. If you like it chunky, just leave them be!
- Adjust the Sweetness: Depending on how ripe and sweet your summer berries are, feel free to tweak the sugar or add an extra squeeze of lime juice to balance the flavors.
Bonus: This recipe is naturally vegan, gluten-free, and refined sugar-free if you swap the granulated sugar for maple syrup or agave!
