It is a little known fact that I love pizza and could eat it everyday. I love to experiment with different flavors but the idea for this BBQ Peach Pizza actually came from a local restaurant. The local pizza joint, to remain nameless, was offering a special pizza that sounded amazing. It was a BBQ Peach Pizza with Andouille Sausage. When I asked the waitress if I could order it without the sausage she came back to the table and said “No, the chef won’t make the peach pizza without the meat on it because then it would just basically be desert pizza.” WTF?!? Needless to say I was pissed. I don’t normally have a hard time ordering veggie options at local restaurants. Local non-chain restaurants are usually pretty accommodating. I left the pizza joint still craving pizza. All I could think about for days was…
BBQ.PEACH.PIZZA.
So eventually I came to the conclusion that I should make my own pizza and it would be glorious. It is the perfect summer pizza! It’s so obvious. Peaches are in season and who doesn’t love barbecue sauce? Summer is for grilling. The flavor of the sweet peaches and the tangy barbeque sauce are a match made in heaven.
The “meat” we used on the pizza is Louisville Vegan Jerky which is soy based. You can buy it at Whole Foods or on Amazon. Their Smoky Carolina BBQ flavor is the best! Homemade smoked BBQ Seitan would work well on this pizza too. We used the vegan jerky because we love the flavor and chewy texture.
We grilled the peaches before adding to the pizza to add a little smoked charred flavor but you can skip that and just add fresh sliced peaches to the pizza before baking.
The recipe calls for equal parts pizza sauce and BBQ sauce. Mix together and slather it on to your favorite pizza dough. We like to use store bought pizza dough because it saves time. Publix has good premade dough. I prefer that to a pre made baked crust but that would work as well. Top with your choice of cheese and bake. When you are ready to serve garnish the pizza with fresh basil.
