What’s in this Beyond Beef Bowl?

This Spicy Firecracker Beyond Beef Bowl is quick and easy to make. It only takes about 20 minutes. The spice level can be adjusted to your personal tastes. The sauce uses buffalo sauce, chili oil, and red pepper flakes. If you want to make it more or less spicy you can adjust the amount of chili oil and red pepper flake used. It’s called firecracker sauce for a reason! It’s pretty spicy but the spice is balanced by a little bit of sweetness.

The Beyond Beef is cooked in the firecracker sauce and served over rice with steamed broccoli. Other veggies could easily be added or substituted in this dish. Sautéed or grilled bell pepper strips or shelled edamame beans would work well in this bowl.

To finish the bowl you can add optional toppings like green onions and sesame seeds. Sometimes we also like to top it with pickled red onion for an extra zing. We usually make a big batch of pickled red onions and add them to different meals through out the week. They are tangy and add a little extra crunch!

Tips for the Perfect Beyond Beef Bowl

  • Don’t Rush the Sear: For the best texture, let the Beyond Beef sit undisturbed in the skillet for 4–5 minutes before breaking it up. This develops those crispy, caramelized edges that mimic traditional ground beef.
  • Customize Your Heat: The “firecracker” kick comes from the combination of buffalo sauce, chili oil, and red pepper flakes. If you prefer a milder meal, start by omitting the chili oil and adding the red pepper flakes slowly.
  • Thicken the Sauce: When you add the sauce to the pan, make sure to cook it for an additional 2–3 minutes. This allows the brown sugar to caramelize, creating a sticky glaze that clings to the Beyond Meat.
  • Meal Prep Friendly: These bowls hold up incredibly well in the fridge! Store the Beyond Beef and rice together, but keep your pickled red onions and green onions in a separate container to maintain their crunch and “zing”.
  • Veggie Swaps: If you’re out of broccoli, this sauce pairs beautifully with grilled bell pepper strips or shelled edamame.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is “Firecracker” sauce?

Our Firecracker sauce is a bold, sweet, and spicy glaze. It gets its “pop” from a combination of buffalo sauce, chili oil, and red pepper flakes, which is then balanced by brown sugar to create a sticky, caramelized finish that clings to the Beyond Beef.

Is this recipe spicy?

Yes, it definitely has a kick! However, it is very easy to customize. If you are sensitive to heat, you can omit the chili oil and red pepper flakes. The buffalo sauce provides a base level of tang and mild spice, while the brown sugar keeps it from being overwhelming.

Can I use something other than Beyond Beef?

Absolutely. While this recipe is designed for the meaty texture of Beyond Beef, you could substitute it with tempeh crumbles, or even extra-firm tofu that has been pressed and crumbled.

How do I get the Beyond Beef crispy?

The secret is to let it sear undisturbed. After adding the Beyond Beef to the skillet, let it sit for 4–5 minutes before breaking it up. This allows the plant-based protein to develop those crispy, caramelized edges that mimic traditional browned beef.

Can I add other vegetables?

Definitely! While we love the simplicity of steamed broccoli, this bowl works great with:

  • Sautéed or grilled bell pepper strips
  • Shelled edamame
  • Shredded carrots
  • Snap peas

How should I store leftovers?

This recipe is a meal prep favorite. Store the cooked Beyond Beef and rice in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3–4 days. We recommend keeping the pickled red onions and green onions in a separate small container so they stay crunchy and fresh until you’re ready to eat.
