Tomato Sliders
These Vegetarian Tomato Sliders are a bite-sized twist on the classic Southern tomato sandwich. Made with sweet Hawaiian rolls and fresh basil, they are the ultimate quick summer appetizer for your next backyard BBQ.
Sliders are super cute mini sandwiches. I mean come on you can’t tell me these aren’t the most adorable tomato sandwiches you have ever seen. Everyone loves minis. They are easy to grab and pop in your mouth. These Tomato Sliders are perfect for parties because they only take about ten minutes to make and they will feed a crowd. Everyone at your party will love that they can just rip off a tomato slider or two and keep mingling.

How To Make Tomato Sliders
This recipe makes a dozen sliders and could easily be doubled to feed a larger group. Plan on serving one to three sliders per person. It could just depend on how much other food you are serving at your gathering.
To save time when feeding a crowd, don’t pull the rolls apart first! Slice the entire slab of rolls in half horizontally, layer your ingredients, and then cut them into individual sliders once the ‘lid’ is back on.
I prefer using Campari tomatoes for this recipe. They are often labeled as “tomatoes on the vine” in the grocery store. They are larger than cherry tomatoes but smaller than standard beefsteak tomatoes, making them the perfect diameter to fit a Hawaiian roll without hanging off the edges. Plus, they have a higher sugar content, which pairs perfectly with the sweet rolls!
Host’s Tip: Tomatoes can sometimes make bread soggy if they sit too long. If you’re taking these to a party, pat your tomato slices dry with a paper towel before assembling. For more travel-friendly party snacks, don’t miss my guide to vegetarian potluck dishes!
Customization Ideas
Want to give these sliders a different twist? Here are a few ways to customize them:
- Make it Caprese: Add a small slice of fresh mozzarella or a drizzle of balsamic glaze.
- Add a Kick: Mix a little Sriracha or crushed red pepper into your vegan mayo.
- Extra Crunch: Add a thin slice of cucumber or some sprouts for added texture.
- Herbed Butter Topping: Brush the tops of the rolls with melted vegan butter and garlic salt, then pop them in the oven for 5 minutes at 350°F before adding the fresh tomatoes.
Serving & Storage Tips
These are best served immediately after assembly so the bread stays fluffy. If you are prepping for a party, you can slice the tomatoes and chop the basil up to a day in advance. Keep them in airtight containers in the fridge, then assemble the sliders right before your guests arrive!
