Road Trip Snack Ideas For Vegans

No road trip is complete without snacks. Some snacks are healthier than others but lets face it I love vegan junk food. The junkier the better. I try to snack healthier (carrot sticks, fruit, nuts, roasted chickpeas) when I am at work but when I am on vacation I tend to go a little crazy. I like to stock up on a few of my favorite vegan snacks before any road trip. It’s cheaper and it cuts down on drive time if we are making less stops for food along the way. It’s super easy to do. I just throw all my snacks into one tote bag to help me stay semi organized and then it’s time to hit the road!

My 10 favorite vegan road trip snacks

Chips

I love crunchy savory snacks! These chips from Late July are the best and yes the Bacon Habanero flavor is vegan! I don’t know that it really tastes like bacon but it does taste like smoky goodness. I love both of these flavors. They are not crazy spicy but the Bacon Habanero is spicier than the Jalapeño Lime.  Just remember to throw a chip clip in your snack bag and you are good to roll.

Coconut Chips

Again there is something so satisfying about that crunch. These Dang Coconut Chips always fill my cravings sweet cravings! The resealable bag is perfect for trips. There are three servings per bag with 170 calories per serving for the original recipe flavor. I also love their toasted caramel flavor.

Vegan Jerky

I am obsessed with Louisville Vegan Jerky! I love all of their flavors. Please don’t make me decide which one is my favorite. I tried and I just can’t so I just end up eating more. We even signed up for the jerky of the month club so that we always stay in stock at our house. The resealable package is great for road trips and often I take it with me on day hikes. Louisville Vegan Jerky is a savory and filling snack. With 7 grams of protein and 80 calories per serving it is a great way to sneak in some extra protein on the road!

Fig Bars

Fig Bars are another filling treat! These are great for morning snacking or a quick breakfast. I have seen these nature’s bakery bars for sale individually in gas stations but to save money I buy them by the box at the grocery store (in the cereal section) before any trip. Each individual package is 220 calories.

Granola

Some sort of trail mix, energy balls, or granola is essential for road trips. If I don’t have time to make my own granola I like to grab some of these Made Good Granola Minis. I love the resealable bag and the bite size pieces. They are easier and less messy to eat than trail mix while you are driving. If you want to make your own granola check out this Spicy Sriracha Granola for something a little different.

Popcorn

Angie’s Boom Chicka Pop Light Kettle Corn is one of several great brands on the market. With only 35 calories per cup it’s a winner in my book. I also really like the Earth Balance brand Vegan Buttery Flavor Popcorn. I like to re-package servings into individual reusable containers. Then I pack those containers on the bottom of my snack bag and the popcorn won’t get crushed.

Fruit

Dried fruit is great for road trips because it travels better than most fresh fruit. Grab some in resealable packages like this one. If you want to go with fresh fruit I recommend grapes and bananas. They tend to travel well and are easy to eat while driving.

Candy

I like Jolly Ranchers hard candies but if they are not your jam check out this Peta list of vegan candy. They have a ton of fun suggestions. Gum is also good to pack for trips. I like to pack smaller items in cute reusable bags like these mason jar bags. Organization and smart storage is king on any road trip. Make sure your snack bag is with in reach in the car (and not packed away in the very back the trunk).

Chocolate

Sometimes we all crave chocolate, right? Please tell me I am not alone here.  I love this brand and I love the natural colors. Unreal dark chocolate peanut gems will satisfy any chocolate craving. Almost all of this brand’s chocolate candies are vegan with the exception of the milk chocolate items.

Cookies

Throw these in your cooler! Hail Merry Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough is great because it’s not overly sweet but will satisfy cravings. They are good for road trips because of the small bite size pieces that you can easily pop in your mouth. Have you noticed I really dig smart resealable packaging? Other great vegan cookie choices include: Thin Mints, Oreos, and Nutter Butter cookies.

If you are looking for some healthier less processed road trip options check out this list from the blog Running on Real Food. She shares a lot of really great ideas on food to make in advance and take on your trip. Also don’t forget to pack some bottles of water in your cooler! It is important to stay hydrated even on the road. We like to plain and carbonated flavored waters.
