Buffalo Seitan Wings in the Air Fryer

Eric bought me an air fryer for Christmas and we can’t stop playing with it. Do you have one? It’s just as cool as that Easy Bake Oven you played with as a kid. It seems to work like magic. I Know Its Not Magic but don’t spoil my fun. I have a new toy to play with.

If you haven’t already noticed we make a lot of seitan at our house. One of the things we like to do with it is fry it. Not so healthy, right? The air fryer is a game changer.  It’s way healthier, faster and with less mess to clean up afterward.

With the Super Bowl coming up we have been making a lot of lists of what we want to eat on game day. Anything Buffalo flavored usually will make the list. We tried air fried buffalo cauliflower using this recipe too and it turned out ok but I know we can improve on it. We are still new to this whole air fryer thing so this is a work in process. Any tips? What else do we need to try in it?

Buffalo Seitan Wings
To make this we started with a batch of our Basic Seitan and then cut it into small wing size pieces.

You will also need:

  • 2 cups plant based milk
  • 1 tbsp plant based egg replacer (we used Follow Your Heart brand from the baking section)
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes
  • Buffalo sauce
  • Vegetable oil (optional)

In a large bowl whisk together the plant milk and the egg replacer. Then divide the flour in half onto two plates. On the second plate of flour mix in all the seasoning ingredients. Dredge the seitan pieces in the plain flour, then the egg wash, and finally in the seasoned flour. Shake off any excess flour and set aside until you are ready to put in the air fryer.

Pre-heat the air fryer to 390 and fry the seitan in small batches so the basket is not over crowded. Fry the seitan wings for 30 minutes. Half way through you can shake the wings and lightly brush them or mist them with oil to help brown them. I left this as optional because they still crisp up without the oil and the color doesn’t matter as much because the last step is to toss the wings in buffalo sauce once they have been fried.
